tormenta noun: storm
  • Una tormenta means a storm, even though it looks rather like the English word ‘torment’.
    Las nubes de tormenta se acercaban. The storm clouds were getting nearer.
  • La tormenta can also be used metaphorically, to refer to a storm, for instance in politics:
    Las nubes de tormenta se acercaban. The storm clouds were getting nearer.
    La noticia provocó una tormenta política sin precedentes. The news caused an unprecedented political storm.
  • Una tormenta en un vaso de agua is a tempest in a teapot, or British a storm in a teacup (word for word, ‘a storm in a glass of water’).
