gordo adjective: fat
  • Like flaco, thin, gordo is a basic word for describing people. Notice the difference in meaning when you use it with ser and estar:
    Es el más gordo de la clase. He’s the fattest person in the class.
  • This implies he’s permanently fat.
    Es el más gordo de la clase. He’s the fattest person in the class.
    No le entra ese pantalón por lo gordo que está. He can’t get into those trousers because he’s got fat.
  • If someone describes a book, un libro, as gordo, they mean it’s a thick or hefty volume.
    Es el más gordo de la clase. He’s the fattest person in the class.
    No le entra ese pantalón por lo gordo que está. He can’t get into those trousers because he’s got fat.
    Lleva en la mano un libro gordo que pone ‘Política económica del Gobierno’. He’s carrying a hefty book which says ‘The Government’s Economic Policy’.
