cocer verb: to cook
  • La cocina is the word for kitchen, and cocer is one of the things that happens in the cocina. It generally means to cook a particular food. It’s often used in the past participle.
    Las zanahorias no están cocidas todavía. The carrots aren’t cooked yet.

  • Cocer is also often used in the reflexive form, cocerse:
    Las zanahorias no están cocidas todavía. The carrots aren’t cooked yet.

    Tarda diez minutos en cocerse. It takes ten minutes to cook.
  • And it appears in a common proverbial phrase, when you want to express the idea that people are the same, despite living in different parts of the world:
